I
cannot remember a time when I was not interested in drawing, painting,
looking at, or reading about art. This
interest never wavered, although my career took me into a highly
technical field. This
long-time interest in art, however, leans toward natural forms and
intense realism. Originally
an oil and landscape painter, I suffered much criticism that my work was
"too realistic." I
gradually came to realize that my leaning toward realism in art was more
suited to depicting the natural world in a closer focus.
For the past several years, I have been exploring nature through
a particular interest in botanical illustration and natural history
subjects. Pursuing botanical subjects offers me license to be as realistic an artist as I can be. I completed a Certificate in Natural Science Illustration at Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), and have begun to share what I have learned through teaching Drawing Nature with Colored Pencil at RISD.
